Project Overview

Derwent Valley Council has commence the development of a master plan for Tynwald Park in New Norfolk.

The master plan will create a vision for Tynwald Park to help guide its future development and management.

This will include looking at how to improve the layout of sporting fields and recreation facilities, to maximise the opportunities for the wider community to make use of and enjoy this much loved recreational area.

More details about this project

Tynwald Park is situated off Hobart Road in New Norfolk. The park is home to several sporting clubs including the New Norfolk Junior Football Club, New Norfolk Cricket Club, and New Norfolk Panthers Soccer Club. It also hosts a weekly parkrun and has a popular children's playground, picnic and BBQ facilities.

A number of walking tracks traverse Tynwald Park connecting it to the surrounding area including:

  • New Norfolk town centre via the pedestrian bridge crossing the Lachlan River and then connecting under the roadway, to Pioneer Avenue.
  • The Esplanade via the Derwent Cliffs track which travels along the Derwent River via the wetlands,
  • Humphrey Street Dog Park and The Avenue via the Bicentennial track alongside the Lachlan River,
  • Millbrook Rise Boat ramp via the track along the Derwent River that passes the historic 1830's mansion 'Tynwald' from which the park gets its name.

These tracks are well used by people exercising (walking/jogging/running), dog walkers, recreational fishermen and bird watchers.

The intention of the master plan is to build on the park’s historical uses and enhance the area as a community facility that provides sporting, open space and recreation opportunities for all members of the community.

The master plan will define the future direction for Tynwald Park, in terms of facility provision, current and future uses of the space and management of the area.

How you can have your say

A community survey was conducted in November and December 2023 to gather initial thoughts and ideas from users of Tynwald Park. A summary of findings from this survey can be downloaded here. This data is being used to help develop a draft masterplan.

Once the draft masterplan is ready in early 2023 it will be made available here for the public to view and comment on.
